Austrian wins with The White Ribbon - 24/05/2009
Haneke finally takes Palme d'Or

The Austrian director Michael Haneke - famous, notorious even for his hard-edge films that push audiences to the limit - has finally lifted the Palme d'Or. The White Ribbon, his typically chilling story of the rise of the conditions that later led to Nazism, told through a choir in a Protestant village in northern Germany on the eve of first world war, was hugely admired by critics.
Having been hot favourite for the award for The Piano Teacher eight years ago and then losing out to the Italian Nanni Moretti, Haneke had apparently girded himself for disappointment again. Ironically that film starred the president of the jury, French actress Isabelle Huppert, and many felt their friendship would count against him.
This time however they was no denying him the prize. Famous for his understatement, the director said, "My wife often asks me if I am happy, and I always say that is a difficult question to answer. Now I can say that I am. Yes, I can say this is a moment when I am truly happy."
Like Francis Ford Coppola's film Tetro in the Director's Fortnight, The White Ribbon was made in black and white. Yet while critics commented on the American director's choice to go artily against the grain, few seemed to notice Haneke was also swimming against the tide. Instead they marvelled at his "masterly control".
Screen International's Mike Goodridge wrote, "When he is on top form Michael Haneke's artistry and unerring control of his material is hard to beat. And he is on top form in The White Ribbon, a meticulously constructed, precisely modulated tapestry of malice and intrigue in a rural village in pre-World War I northern Germany. It's a rich, detailed work pregnant with the sinister undertones and evil deeds for which the film-maker's work is legendary and won't disappoint Haneke fans waiting for fresh material" after Funny Games, Hidden, and Code Inconnu.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian in London was equally adulatory. "Some viewers may be intrigued, or exasperated, that no clear culprit is ever unmasked. And yet the perpetrators' identities are not so hard to guess, and this open-endedness has the unfinished quality of real life. The White Ribbon has an absolute confidence and mastery of its own cinematic language, and the performances Haneke elicits from his first-rate cast, particularly the children, are eerily perfect."
It was the tough French prison drama A Prophet, however, that got the biggest cheer of the night when it won the Grand Prize. It had been almost unanimously the critics' choice for the Palme, and in any other year would probably have been a runaway winner. But with a vintage crop of serious contenders in the main competition, Haneke may have finally edged it because of the very fact that himself has been so often the bridesmaid.
Audiard was sanguine when asked afterwards was he not disappointed that a film already declared a "masterpiece" had not won. "I can't reply to that," he said. "I can't say if it is a masterpiece. Fifteen days ago I was still finishing this film. In ways, I discovered the film myself at Cannes. We are very modest."
He did, however, go out of his way to pour praise on his unknown young star Tahar Rahim, describing him as "remarkable". In fact, the big shock of the night was that Rahim did not win best actor, an award that went instead to the Austrian actor Christoph Waltz for playing a Nazi in Quentin Tarantino's "spaghetti war film" Inglourious Basterds. Up to now Waltz has been best known for his bedside manner playing doctors on TV. He thanked Tarantino, who did not attend the awards ceremony after the roasting his film took from the critics, for "giving me back my vocation".
Charlotte Gainsbourg won best actress for her harrowing performance in Lars Von Trier's shockfest, Antichrist. Ironically, Isabelle Huppert won best actress also in 2001 for Haneke's The Piano Teacher, which also contained scenes of genital self-mutilation. Gainsbourg called the film the "the strongest, most painful and most exciting experience of my whole life" and paid tribute to her father, the cult French singer Serge Gainsbourg - no stranger to controversy himself - who would have been "proud and shocked, I hope".
Earlier in the day, The White Ribbon had won France's education ministry prize, meaning it will be pointed out to teachers across the country as a work worth studying in the classroom.
While the New Zealand director Jane Campion did not win anything in the end, despite a triumphant return to form with Bright Star, the other woman director in the main competition, Britain's Andrea Arnold won her second Cannes Jury prize for Fish Tank, which she shared with the Korean Park Chan-wook for his priestly vampire flick, Thirst. The Filipino director Brillante Mendoza won best director for extraordinarily tough Kinatay and the 87-year-old French director Alain Resnais, who delighted audiences with his comedy Wild Grass, was given a lifetime achievement award.
The Camera d'Or for best first film went to Australian Aboriginal director Warwick Thornton for Samson and Delilah. The film's stars are two Aboriginal actors who do not have access to telephones, so it could take a while for the news of their success to reach them.
